Let me be upfront about something. When I first heard Skoda was bringing a seven-seat electric SUV to India priced around Rs. 38 lakh, my immediate reaction was skepticism. Not because the brand doesn’t have credibility here — the Kushaq and Slavia proved that Skoda can build something genuinely good for Indian conditions — but because large electric vehicles and India have had a rocky relationship. Range anxiety, charging infrastructure, and the brutal summer heat are real concerns, not hypothetical ones. So when the Skoda Peaq specifications started circulating, I sat down and actually worked through the numbers rather than just relaying the press material.
Here’s where I landed: this might be the first genuinely sensible large electric SUV for the Indian family buyer. Not perfect, not without compromises, but sensible in a way that the imported alternatives simply aren’t.
Why a Seven-Seater EV Is Such a Hard Problem to Solve
Before getting into what Skoda has done, it’s worth understanding why nobody has cracked this segment properly in India yet.
A large ICE SUV carries its fuel in a tank that weighs almost nothing when empty. A large electric SUV carries its energy in a battery pack that weighs somewhere between 400 and 600 kilograms regardless of charge level. That weight doesn’t disappear. It sits in the floor, it strains the suspension, it affects how the vehicle handles bumps, and in a country where speed breakers appear without warning and at dimensions that would qualify as small hills, protecting that battery pack from physical damage is not a trivial engineering challenge.
The second problem is heat. Indian summers routinely push ambient temperatures past 45 degrees Celsius in many parts of the country. Battery chemistry — particularly the Nickel Manganese Cobalt variety used in most premium EVs — does not enjoy this. Thermal management isn’t a nice-to-have feature in India. It’s the difference between a battery that survives five years and one that degrades noticeably within eighteen months.
The third problem is the sheer cost of importing a large EV. Completely built units attract customs duties that make even reasonably priced global EVs land at prices that only a very narrow slice of buyers can consider. So the only real path to volume is local assembly, and local assembly requires platform flexibility and supplier ecosystems that most manufacturers haven’t built here yet.
Skoda’s answer to all three problems is worth examining.
The Localization Play — and Why It Actually Matters
The Peaq will be assembled at the Chakan facility in Pune, the same plant that currently produces the Kushaq and Kodiaq. This isn’t just a marketing footnote. Under the heavy localization plan, components like the battery casing, suspension subframes, and wiring harnesses will be manufactured or sourced domestically.
This matters for one very practical reason: cost. The Rs. 38 lakh starting price for the base RWD variant is only achievable if the vehicle isn’t being imported as a finished unit and taxed accordingly. Skoda estimates that localizing battery pack assembly alone — using cells from global suppliers who have Indian manufacturing commitments — reduces battery acquisition costs by around twenty percent. That’s a meaningful number when the battery is typically forty to fifty percent of an EV’s total manufacturing cost.
The MEB platform underneath the Peaq is a dedicated electric vehicle architecture, which means it was designed from scratch to accommodate floor-mounted batteries, not retrofitted from a petrol car. That distinction matters more than people realize. Platforms that started life as ICE architectures and were later converted for electrification often make compromises on cabin space, structural rigidity around the battery, and weight distribution. MEB doesn’t have those legacy constraints.
Two Batteries, Two Very Different Use Cases
One of the smarter choices Skoda has made is offering two chemically distinct battery options rather than just two sizes of the same chemistry.
The base 62 kWh pack uses Lithium Iron Phosphate chemistry. LFP batteries have a well-established reputation for thermal stability — they are significantly more resistant to heat-related degradation than NMC alternatives. For Indian summers, this is a serious advantage. LFP cells also tolerate being charged to 100% regularly without the same penalty that NMC cells incur. If you want to leave home every morning with a full battery, an LFP pack lets you do that without worrying about accelerating long-term capacity loss.
The trade-off is energy density. LFP packs are physically larger and heavier for the same energy content compared to NMC, which is why the 62 kWh LFP variant makes 204 PS and targets a 510 km certified range, while the 82 kWh NMC AWD variant steps up to 299 PS and 615 km. The NMC pack also enables the dual-motor all-wheel-drive configuration because packaging two motors with the higher-density NMC pack keeps weight within manageable limits.
For most families — school runs, weekend trips, the occasional highway journey — the base LFP variant makes better financial and practical sense. The Rs. 8 lakh premium for the AWD variant is hard to justify unless you specifically need all-weather traction or the additional performance headroom.
Charging: The Honest Picture
DC fast charging at 150 kW is the headline spec, and the claim that a ten-to-eighty percent charge takes twenty-eight minutes is plausible given the pack sizes and power rating. But here’s the part that often gets glossed over in launch coverage: that twenty-eight minute figure assumes you arrive at a charger in a thermally stable vehicle, and it assumes the charger is actually delivering 150 kW.
In practice, if you’ve been driving in 42-degree heat for three hours and you plug into a fast charger, the battery management system will limit charging power to protect the cells until the active liquid cooling circuit brings temperatures down. The Peaq’s cooling system — which circulates coolant through plates beneath the battery cells — should handle this reasonably well, but real-world fast charging sessions after long summer drives will likely take closer to forty minutes than twenty-eight.
Home charging is where the running cost story gets genuinely compelling. Fill the 62 kWh pack at home at Rs. 8 per unit and you’re spending around Rs. 496 for roughly 400 km of real-world range. That works out to about Rs. 1.20 per kilometer. A comparable diesel seven-seater running at 12 kmpl with diesel at Rs. 92 per liter costs around Rs. 7.67 per kilometer. The gap is enormous and it doesn’t close even at public DC fast charging rates, which push the Peaq’s running cost to around Rs. 3.72 per kilometer — still less than half the diesel equivalent.
The Ride Quality Question — India’s Real Test
Suspension tuning for India is something Skoda has gotten genuinely good at with its MQB-A0-IN models. The Kushaq’s suspension calibration is widely regarded as one of the better setups in its segment for Indian roads. The Peaq takes a different approach by necessity because the vehicle dynamics of a heavy electric seven-seater are fundamentally different from a petrol crossover.
The multi-link rear suspension is tuned specifically for the additional unsprung mass that comes with carrying seven passengers plus the battery weight. Variable-rate dampers progressively stiffen under load, which sounds like engineering jargon but translates to a practical benefit: the car won’t bottom out on large speed breakers with a full load, which is a real failure mode on some loaded electric SUVs that weren’t designed with Indian road conditions in mind.
The hydraulic bushing mounts for the suspension subframes are designed to isolate high-frequency vibrations from rough road surfaces. Ground clearance of 188 mm unladen dropping to approximately 172 mm at full payload is acceptable for most city roads and well-maintained highways, though it’s worth noting that this is lower than some body-on-frame competitors. The three-millimeter aluminum-steel composite underbody skid plate protecting the battery is a non-negotiable feature for India, and Skoda has included it on all India-spec variants.
The Interior: Flat Floor Is a Bigger Deal Than It Sounds
The absence of a transmission tunnel — possible because there’s no gearbox or driveshaft running front to rear — creates a genuinely flat floor in the second row. On paper this sounds like a minor ergonomic detail. In a seven-seat family car on a long road trip, it means the middle passenger in the second row isn’t perching uncomfortably over a hump for four hours. That’s the kind of real-world usability that families notice.
The 2+3+2 configuration with sliding second-row seats — 150 mm of longitudinal adjustment — also means adults can actually sit in the third row without their knees jammed against the second row. Skoda’s specification that the third row accommodates occupants up to 170 cm comfortably is a genuine claim rather than aspirational marketing, given the flat floor packaging advantage.
Third-row access through sliding second-row seats rather than fold-forward seats is a quality-of-life improvement that most families who use the third row regularly will appreciate. Dedicated air vents and USB-C ports back there signal that Skoda actually expects the third row to be occupied rather than treating it as an occasional emergency seat.
The 210-litre boot with all rows up is honest about the packaging trade-off. It’s tight. With seven people aboard, you’re fitting weekend bags for two and hoping everyone packs light. This is the reality of seven-seat packaging at this vehicle length, and buyers should go in with that expectation.
The Competition and Where the Peaq Sits
The Peaq’s Rs. 38-46 lakh price band puts it in genuinely contested territory. High-spec five-seat electric crossovers from established manufacturers sit in this range, and the Peaq’s value proposition is primarily about the additional cabin volume and third-row seating rather than outright performance or technology superiority.
Against imported seven-seat EVs, the Peaq’s locally assembled pricing gives it a structural cost advantage that isn’t going away. Against diesel luxury seven-seaters in the Rs. 40-50 lakh range, the EV road tax exemptions in states like Delhi, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh narrow the on-road price gap by up to Rs. 4.8 lakh, which changes the initial cost calculus considerably.
The honest competitive risk is that buyers who primarily drive within city limits might question whether they need seven seats enough to pay for them. The Peaq’s answer to that is the LFP battery’s combination of thermal resilience, long cycle life, and flat floor packaging — a set of features that no competitor currently offers together in this price range.
Who Should Actually Consider This
If your household regularly needs to move more than five people — school runs with three kids plus parents, weekend family trips with parents-in-law, long highway drives where third-row use is genuine rather than theoretical — and you have access to home charging, the Peaq’s value case is strong.
The base 62 kWh LFP RWD variant is the one to buy unless you have a specific, non-negotiable need for all-wheel drive traction. The LFP chemistry’s tolerance for Indian heat and repeated full charges gives it a long-term durability advantage that protects residual value better than an NMC pack used in the same conditions.
The early 2026 launch timing means buyers in the first year will be test subjects to some extent — software calibration, charging network reliability, and long-term battery behaviour in Indian conditions are all things that only emerge with real-world usage data. If you’re risk-tolerant, being an early adopter gets you the EV road tax benefits in states that currently offer them. If you prefer to let others discover the teething issues first, waiting for mid-2026 owner feedback before committing is a reasonable position.
Either way, the Skoda Peaq is the first large electric seven-seater that’s been engineered with Indian conditions in mind from the ground up rather than adapted from a global product as an afterthought. That alone makes it worth watching closely.
